Dharma Television

OVERVIEW

Religion has been serving as the nectar of liberation for those who are seeking refuge from materialistic world. Regardless of social status and wealth, Buddhahood is the only goal for all humankind. While attainment of happiness instead of pain, peace without fear, liberation from all the obstacles and dispelling ignorance by acquisition of enlightenment is called Buddhahood.

Unfortunately, embroiled in the day to day struggles for survival, we believe that true happiness is in the mere possession of wealth but lies in the joy of achieving Buddhahood.

Despite knowing that our life is a mortal one, human desire will never stop from longing for more; the less we get the more we want, and all these materialistic gains stood there as a reason behind our happiness. But many of us are unaware of the fact that this worldly pleasure attained from things and people is temporary and will extent only for momentary period. We will all die one day.

As the saying “my money, prestige, property” goes in our society, people consider wealth and possession as the source of prestige and pride but this neither help them to get real peace and happiness nor in the achievement of wisdom. People are not content and satisfied with what they already have; there lies a small hidden desire in their mind which gives birth to another path that lead to disruption of peace of mind.

To summarize the principle of Lord Buddha and many other noble ones, the four noble truths were introduced. The Four Noble Truths comprise the essence of Buddha's teachings. They are the truth of suffering, the truth of the cause of suffering, the truth of the end of suffering, and the truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering.

More simply put, suffering exists; it has a cause; it has an end; and it has a cause to bring about its end. The notion of suffering is not intended to convey a negative world view, but rather, a realistic perspective that deals with the world as it is an attempt to rectify it. The concept of pleasure is not denied but acknowledged as fleeting. Pursuit of pleasure can only continue what is ultimately an unquenchable thirst.

The same logic disproves an understanding of happiness. In the end, only aging, sickness, and death are certain and unavoidable. Suffering is like illness. The medicine that cures the disease is the true path. Therefore, it is necessary to rely on the path which will bring the state of freedom from suffering.

We cannot measure the differences between our previous life and gain in this life, but Lord Buddha has said that the cycle of rebirth is determined by karma, literally a deed done deliberately through body, speech or mind, which leads to future consequences. Buddhist doctrine dictates pleasure and pain comes from our own former action (karma), if you act well, things will be good, and if you act badly, things will be bad. Teachings about karma explain that our past actions affect us, either positively or negatively, and that our present actions will affect us in the future. Buddha's   teaching is that you are your own master; everything depends on yourself.

In this world, Gautama Buddha also enjoyed the noble happiness but at last he sacrificed all of his noble luxury and realized the bitter truth of life but after years of meditation, finally achieved enlightenment and became the founder of Buddhism.

After that Gautama Buddha through his kindness and compassion tried to bring inner peace without sorrow, prison of samsara into nirvana, liberation into knowledge and for the first time he gives the wisdom of Buddhahood to the world.
